Genetic engineering in aquaculture: Perspectives on Management and Sustainability

The project focuses on how scientists and policymakers acknowledges and deals with scientific uncertainties related to the introduction of novel technologies in complex ecosystems, such as biotechnology in aquaculture. It is part of an interdisciplinary project including fish immunology, molecular biology, philosophy of science and sociology. The aim is to gather perspectives on risk, social values and community expectations with regard to introduction of modern biotechnology in aquaculture, e.g. transgenic fish, DNA vaccines and Genetically modified (GM) feed. The purpose is to identify the role of scientific evidence, expert advice and other forms of knowledge in decision making utilised in complex issues such as the use of modern biotechnology in aquaculture. So far I have conducted an uncertainty analyses of experts view on the introduction of DNA vaccines in aquaculture and I am currently doing interviews for a stakeholder assessment of different feed resources for aquacultured salmon.
