The second Coordination Meeting for Governments and Organizations Implementing or Funding Biosafety Capacity-Building Activities was held in Tromsø from 18 to 20 January 2006. The meeting was attended by 39 participants.

GenØk was the local host of the meeting, which was sponsored and hosted by the Government of Norway in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The meeting was opened by Mr. Poul Engberg-Pedersen, Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The following key items were discussed at the meeting:

- Consideration of practical measures to achieve operational-level synergies and complementarities between capacity-building initiatives.

- Consideration of practical experiences, best practices and lessons learned in capacity-building for the effective implementation of the Cartagena Protocol.

- Input into the comprehensive review of the Action Plan for Building Capacities for the Effective Implementation of the Protocol.
